Against the backdrop of Russia’s war in Ukraine, the COVID-19 pandemic, and rising tensions with the United States, policymakers in Beijing are increasingly focused on the future of China's food security. How are Chinese scholars assessing external and domestic risks to their country’s food supply, and what actions do they recommend Beijing undertake to make this supply more resilient and secure?

Please join the Interpret: China project for a panel discussion unpacking these important questions, drawing on recently translated primary source materials. The panel will feature Gustavo Ferreira, Agricultural Officer with the 353rd Civil Affairs Command, U.S. Army Reserves and Senior Agricultural Economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Karen Mancl, Professor of Food, Agricultural and Biological Engineering, Water Quality Specialist, at the Ohio State University, Even Pay, Director, Agriculture at Trivium China, and Caitlin Welsh, Director, Global Food and Water Security Program at CSIS. The panel discussion will be moderated by Lily McElwee, Deputy Director and Fellow with the Freeman Chair in China Studies.

This event is made possible by support from the Ford Foundation and the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
