Abstract
This report follows the Asia Energy Roundtable “Energy and the Environment” discussion held on 8 July 2010. With the global demand for energy expected to double by 2050, Asia faces an energy crunch even as many of its economies grow from strength to strength. Issues of energy and the environment are multifaceted and complex, and it is critical that we examine these now, for any impact on Asia’s environment will have consequences on the entire world. Organised against the backdrop of the inaugural Shell Eco-Marathon Asia at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the experts at the roundtable discussion included Mr. Tan Chong Meng, Executive Vice-President of Global Business-to-Business (B2B) and Lubricants, Shell, Mr. Agus Sari, Global CEO of Conservation, The Green Energy Company (Indonesia), Mr. Shahid Hasan, Associate Director for Regulatory Studies and Governance Division at The Energy Resources Institute TERI (India), and Dr. C. S. Kiang, Founding Dean of the College of Environmental Sciences, Beijing University (China). The session was moderated by Prof. Simon Tay, Chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, and Mr. Thomas A. Stewart, Chief Marketing & Knowledge Officer of Booz & Company.
