The development objectives of the Improved Rural Connectivity Project for Zambia are to: (i) improve the recipient’s rural road accessibility for communities in selected areas; (ii) strengthen institutional capacity for sustainable management of rural roads; and (iii) respond promptly and effectively to an eligible crisis or emergency. Some of the negative impacts and mitigation measures include: (1) land restoration by way of planting of trees around the borrow pits and quarry will be carried out to obscure aesthetic intrusion; (2) ensure that dispensing points have drip pans and contain fuel tanks and drums in an impervious bund of sufficient capacity; (3) educate and sensitize workers on the dangers of human immunodeficiency virus and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV and AIDS) and promote self-protection, abstinence from casual sex and the use of condoms; (4) all solid wastes will be appropriately stored on site and removed from the site to an approved waste disposal site for poor waste management practices; (5) use personal protective equipment (dust masks) in the event of excess dust being generated; (6) consolidate and drain the haul road from the borrow pit to ensure that the impact of runoff on water quality is minimized; and (7) choose the method of road construction which will minimize the need for extensive earthworks.
