There are nearly 600,000 refugee and asylum seekers living in Kenya – the fifth largest refugee population in Africa.1 Most refugees are currently concentrated in two areas: Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement in Turkana County (42 percent), and Dadaab Refugee Camp in Garissa County (42 percent). An additional 16 percent of refugees reside in Nairobi and other urban areas. Majority of refugees are from Somalia and South Sudan, followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, and Burundi. The two largest refugee camps – Kakuma and Dadaab – have evolved into semi-permanent settlements, as most refugees have been unable to return to their countries of origin given the protracted nature of conflicts in the region.
