Ghana is highly dependent on imports, especially of rice (55% of rice consumed) and poultry, to meet local demand. The development of agro-processing (for example soybean) has been limited as the share of locally-processed agricultural products decreased from nearly 15% in 2001 to 5% in 2019. The number of people experiencing severe food insecurity rose from 1.4 million in 2014-16 to 1.8 million in 2019-21. The Ghana Food and Agriculture Delivery Compact aims to mobilize investments to reduce the food self-sufficiency gap, especially for rice, soybeans, and poultry value chains with a total envelope of approximately USD 1.4 billion.
